Being a film student at New Arts, Commerce and Science College's Department of Communication Studies, I have chosen the topic, 'Portrayal of Female Characters in Anurag Kashyap Films' for my project. The reason for choosing this topic is that discussing coming-of-age characters
feels of an importance, as cinema is a medium which somewhere reflects the
society, whereas somewhere it creates a huge impact on the audience. We see a
lot of characters coming to life in the cinematic universe. Each of the
directors have their own unique style of portraying characters in a variety of
shades defining one of a kind elements. Understanding why the different
characters are written the way they are brings out the broader perspective of human
complexities. Female characters have majorly been portrayed in a way which the
patriarchs appreciate. Few of the directors have written and portrayed women
who are bold, independent, decision makers, taking charge of their lives, who
own their sexuality and a lot much more. Testosterone driven films have driven
Bollywood crazy in every decade on an usual basis, but women centric films have
bought about a change in the film industry with new stories, new concepts, new
point of views and of course, a new way of seeing and understanding films.
Directors like Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, Rituparno Ghosh,
Gauri Shinde, Zoya Akhtar, Meghna Gulzar, Alankrita Shrivastava, Anurag Kashyap
etc have come up with many promising films where women drive the narratives and
characters from these films have been praised, appreciated and celebrated,
which is a cherry on top...! So, hop in and share your perspectives regarding
different female characters, the good, the bad, the evil...any dimension you
feel like expressing about.
